The BASA Awards' judging process is simple, flexible, and conducted online. You can start and stop evaluating and assessing entries at any time of the day at your convenience. As a judge, this presents a golden opportunity for you to learn how entrepreneurs worldwide are starting businesses and beating entrepreneurial challenges to become successful in different industries.

You will be acknowledged for your contributions at the end of the judging process. Judges will receive an e-certificate that is sharable online and on social media as a token of appreciation, and their Biography will be featured on the BASA Awards website. Rest assured, BASA Awards observes strict privacy and confidentiality measures; thus, none of your contact information will be shared with a third party.

V. Procedure and Standards for Selection

The process of selecting judges for the BASA Awards is thorough. The esteemed judges, ranging from industry professionals to entrepreneurs and business leaders, are carefully selected based on their profound industry knowledge, qualifications and accomplishments, advanced experience, and exceptional judging abilities. The rigorous process ensures that only highly qualified individuals capable of providing a fair judgment are selected to evaluate entries.

These are the four award programs for which you can participate. You will receive a separate certificate for each awards program.

Applications are accepted anytime, but approvals and access to the judging portal commence at the start of the judging period. Applying early ensures prompt processing of your application.

IX. Registering as an Industry Expert and Judge for Awards Programs

Registering for one or more Award Programs as an Industry Expert and Judge.

STEP 1: Complete the application form here.

STEP 2: Sign the Judge's agreement, provide your picture, and book a time for the interview for our Judges section.

You will be issued an e-Certificate for each award program in which you contribute as a judge. Upon successful completion of your judging assignments,  an e-Certificate will be issued. Ensure eligibility by signing up, getting approval, and assessing and evaluating entries to get the e-certificate and other benefits.

The BASA team will evaluate your Judge's application, and you will receive access to the judging portal only if selected.

X. Understanding the Procedures for Approval as a BASA Awards Judge

After applying as a judge, the BASA team will evaluate your application. The selected judges will receive an approval letter. Please note that the different award programs may have different judging periods.

1. What are some of the reasons that could lead to delayed approval?
   
   • Failure to use an appropriate business email address. email addresses with @gmail, @yahoo, and @aol may experience longer approval times.
   • Failure to provide requested links and/or proof of employment
   • Failure to include a professional photo to be used for your profile on the BASA website.
2. Why Your Application for Judging Was Not Accepted
   BASA Awards aims to maintain excellence and integrity in the judging process. While we receive hundreds of applications, unfortunately, not all are successful. Here are the reasons why your application may not be approved:
   
   • Lack of a professional Email address and a mismatched Email Domain: Please note that a professional email address is needed, and it should be from a business or employer's domain. Make sure the email domain matches the current workplace. Applications sent using personal emails will automatically be disqualified.
   • Failure to prove employment: It is crucial to provide verifiable proof of your current employment status, such as a LinkedIn profile or a link to your company's website. Failure to provide such a link will lead to disqualification.
   • Mismatch of the professional background and award program: The BASA Award program needs judges with specific qualifications and expertise. If you do not meet the specific background requirement for award programs you apply to, your application will be disqualified.
   • Disqualification for Incomplete Assessments in the Past Competition: If you served as a judge in the previous BASA Awards in the past but failed to complete the assigned assessments, your current application will be disqualified.
   • Disqualification for lack of professional commentaries: Previous BASA Awards judges who did not provide feedback and comments for entries in past competitions will not be considered in their current applications.
   • Verification Concerns: Your application, including your professional credentials and experience, must be verifiable, failure to which your application will be declined.
   • Duplication disqualification: Submitting duplicate applications using multiple email addresses will result in your applications' disqualification.
   We strongly encourage all applicants to thoroughly review the above criteria and adhere to all the requirements. The above guideline will help avoid unnecessary disqualification as we strive to uphold a high standard of the selection process.
   
3. Judge Disclosure Requirements and Email Policy
   Our systems are designed to check and verify the consistency between your email domain and the LinkedIn Profile for authenticity. Any discrepancy between your LinkedIn Profile and email domain may lead to the nullification of your application. It is important to note that this process does not entail sharing your personal information with any third party; we maintain all applicants' confidentiality and privacy.
   
   Transparency is the foundation of the BASA Awards and our advocacy for integrity. Therefore, judges are expected to uphold high transparency and openness to public recognition. Your employer must be informed about your participation as a BASA Judge. Seeking clearance from employers about public recognition is a mandatory step, as the judges' professional credibility, demonstrated through their public profile, is essential for preserving the integrity of the BASA Awards. This transparency is crucial for entrants to validate the judges' legitimacy. If, for any reason, your employer does not permit the use of your professional Email, we advise reconsidering your application as a judge for the BASA Awards. We seek to collaborate with judges who take pride in publicly showcasing their role as volunteer judges in the BASA Awards, aligning with our values and commitment to professional integrity.
4. Disqualification, Indefinite Bans, and Justifications for Not Being Allowed to Participate
   

   Why some Judges who participate may still be barred even after finishing all or parts of the duties.

   BASA Awards is committed to maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism. While the majority of our judges adhere to these principles, certain actions and instances may result in a permanent ban from the BASA Awards, as listed below:
   
   • Providing false Background Information: Judges providing misleading information about their qualifications or professional experience may face disqualification and a permanent ban from participating in the future BASA Awards judging assignments.
   • Rudeness and unprofessional behavior:  BASA Awards is committed to maintaining integrity and fostering respectful and professional conduct. Judges who display uncouth and unprofessional behavior while interacting with fellow judges, partners, participants, or the BASA Awards team through communications channels such as emails, texts, and comments will be dismissed and permanently banned.
   • Disclosure of the participants' content or unlawful sharing of assignment content: Upholding confidentiality is a fundamental ethical principle at the BASA Awards. Judges are required to adhere to confidentiality guidelines strictly provided by BASA Awards. Any action involving downloading, reproducing, or sharing any part of the participants' information or the judge's assignment may lead to disqualification and or a permanent ban. Judges must refrain from sharing any assignment content with nominees or external parties or nominees.

By implementing these measures, we safeguard the integrity, fairness, and confidentiality of the BASA Awards judging process. We express gratitude for the dedication and professionalism exhibited by the majority of our Judges, who significantly contribute to the success of our awards program. Collaboratively, we uphold the highest standards of excellence and recognition within the industry.

XI. Scoring Process

Each entry will be carefully reviewed and assigned a score by each Judge on a scale of 1 to 100, according to the following criteria:

• Excellent (Score: Above75)
• Good (Score: 60-75)
• Above average (Score: 50-60)
• Average (Score: 40-50)
• Below average (Score: 30-40)
• Poor (Score: Below 20)
  

1. How points are calculated to determine winners
   
   • All entries are assessed upon submission to ensure the entry meets the eligibility criteria and that all fields are filled as per the requirements. Once the application is approved, it is moved to the evaluation phase.
   • All approved entries for each category will be evaluated based on their merit and the set criteria. The final score of each entry is the average score of the marks awarded by each jury member in the category.
   • Entries that score an average of 75% from the Judges will be named BASA Finalists and submitted to a public vote to increase their chance of becoming Winners and making it to the TopList. The TopList comprises all companies with the highest score from the public vote. The Finalists with the highest average score per category from both judge
2. Considerations for Scoring

   When determining a score, consider the following factors:

   • Entrants Achievements: Ensure that the nominee clearly outlines a significant achievement as per the provided guidelines.
   • Supporting media: Verify if the nominee has provided detailed supporting media, including videos, essays, or photos.
   • Supporting Links: Assess whether the nominees have included additional supporting material, such as website links, to support their claims.
   • Startup categories: Ensure the nominee has sufficient evidence of the founding years provided and major achievements relevant to the assignment.
3. Before recusing an assignment, consider the following:
   • Uncategorized entries : Judges are expected to rely on the submitted content to make an informed and fair evaluation for submissions not specific to any categories. The quality and relevance of the supporting material should guide the judges in making well-informed decisions.
4. Declining an assignment:
   • Recusing from an assignment: Judges have the option to recuse themselves. If, at any given point during the assessment assignment, judges believe they are not qualified to evaluate or assess an entry due to a potential conflict of interest,  they are permitted to recuse. However, judges must provide a valid reason for recusing to maintain transparency.

XII. Guidelines for Judge's Comments

Judges must leave constructive comments on the reviewed entries during the evaluation and assessment of entries. These comments should provide insightful feedback about performance and areas for improvement. The judges will provide comments anonymously, ensuring that entrants do not know which judge made the comments for confidentiality and impartiality. BASA Awards highly values judges who leave impactful comments, as entrants can use these for valuable developments or noteworthy marketing items.

• Judges' comments: Judges must give insightful comments highlighting each entry's strengths and weaknesses. The comments aim to help the entrant understand their performance.
• Personalized comments: Judges should refrain from duplicating comments from other sources. It is encouraged to share only valid, authentic, and genuine thoughts about an entry.
• Assessing the application quality: When leaving comments, emphasize the strong areas, such as sufficient supporting links and videos. While positive comments appreciate and acknowledge well-done aspects by the entrants, the negative comments must offer constructive feedback and suggestions for areas of improvement.
• Anonymous comments: Judges must not reveal their identity while leaving comments. Entrants should not be able to link a comment to a particular judge. All comments must be respectful.

   Please be informed that these are general examples, and specific comments will vary depending on the individual entries and the evaluation provided by the judges.
2. Understanding the BASA Awards Scoring Guidelines for Judges
   At the BASA Awards, our goal is to celebrate and recognize small businesses worldwide. Therefore, the evaluation conducted by judges is of great importance as it helps identify the deserving winner. Judges' integrity during the judging process is crucial because it helps maintain fairness and transparency for all entrants. Here is the illustration of the scoring scale:
   • Excellent (Score: Above 75) - Entries presented here show high execution standards and impact within their categories. Demonstration through images, videos, and other supporting material surpasses expectations and should be a benchmark for others.
   • Good (Score: 60-75) - The entry showcases commendable small business achievements with quality supporting materials. The performance is solid and has good overall execution.
   • Average (Score: 40-60) -The entry showcases just enough achievements, suggesting areas for improvement in small business achievements. Although there are quality supporting materials, there is a need to enhance execution to improve the presentation.
   • Below average (Score: 30-40) - The entries lack effort in effectively demonstrating achievements, and poor communication is evident.
   • Poor (Score: Below 20) - Incomplete entries
   • 0 score - Entries with false and misleading information. Such an entry is often banned from future participation in the BASA Awards.
3. How points are calculated to determine winners
   The final score of each entry is the average score of the marks awarded by each jury member in the category. Based on these average scores, the entries that get an average score of 75% and above are named the BASA Awards Finalists. All Finalists are admitted to a round of public voting to increase their chances of being winners or joining the  TopList.  Nominations with the high public votes will make it to the TopList. After the public vote, the Judges' round No. 2 starts. Finalists with the highest average score per category from both judges and public votes will be named BASA Winners. We will have one winner per category.
   
4. Scoring Guidelines:
   • Objectives Evaluation - Evaluate each entry's strong and weak points guided by the provided criteria. Avoid using personal understanding outside the criteria to prevent introducing a bias.
   • Providing Constructive feedback: Judges need to offer constructive comments, both positive and negative comments, to all entrants. Those looking to resubmit in the future can use the comments to improve their entries, while those with excellent performance can use the comments as a marketing asset.
   • Application of the Full Scale: The scoring guide allows the judge to thoroughly assess and distinguish the different levels of achievement among entries. Judges should exercise thoughtfulness and fairness while giving scores.

Judges play a pivotal role in determining the winners of the BASA Awards. Therefore, judges are expected to handle their responsibility with utmost diligence and integrity, ensuring that their evaluation reflects the high standards of the BASA Awards. 

XIII.  Judges’ Anonymity

Judges must not reveal their identity while leaving comments. Entrants should not be able to link a comment to a particular judge. All comments must be respectful and polite, focusing on the entries' strengths and areas of improvement. The concept of anonymity ensures a fair and unbiased evaluation of the entries.

We appreciate your comprehension and dedication to upholding the fairness of the judging procedure.

• Judges Profile: The selected judges will have their full names published on the BASA Awards website, and their LinkedIn profile will also be shared on the website and other social media platforms. Judges must ensure that they update their current LinkedIn profiles.
• Timeline: The judges' profiles will be published after completing 50 evaluations.The e-Badge and e-Certificate will be issued after the winners' announcement.
• Recognition for judges: Judges will be acknowledged with a token of appreciation, e-badge, and e-certificate only after assessing a minimum of  50 entries.
• Timeline: The e-Badge and e-Certificate will be issued after the winners' announcement.
• Printed Certificate: Starting in 2024, BASA Awards will no longer mail the physical certificate. However, judges who wish to have a printed copy/hard copy can make a purchase.
• Reference Letters: The reference letters will be issued exclusively to judges who successfully complete at least 50 assessments.
• Official Email:  Judges must keep an updated official email address throughout their engagement with the  BASA Awards. Communication will be exclusively through their work/business email, not personal emails.
• Participating Judges Acknowledgment: Judges who assess fewer than 50 entries will not receive the tokens of appreciation, including an e-badge, e-certificate, or reference letter. However, the BASA Awards website will acknowledge their significant contributions under the "Participating Judges Acknowledgment." The role played by every judge is highly appreciated.

   You can download and use the BASA background to your LinkedIn profile. You’ll receive it by email as part of the BASA Judges Kit.
2. Requesting a Reference Letter from BASA Awards
   Given the high volume of reference letter requests received at the BASA Awards, processing many requests quickly presents challenges. We request judges to use digital signature services, including DocuSign, HelloSign, and other similar platforms, to avoid delays. The digital services help reduce the processing time. For your convenience, here is a step-by-step guide on how to use the digital services. We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

XV. Can a Judge submit an Award application?

The BASA Awards welcomes everyone, including the judges, to submit their entries in the spirit of openness, fairness, and equality. Judges are not restricted from participating as entrants. However, it is important to note that when submitting entries, judges will follow the due process, follow the same procedure, and pay all the applicable fees just as other participants. This approach ensures that the field is leveled for all the entrants and integrity is maintained.

After applying as a judge, you will receive an email confirming your application is under review.

Question: When will I find out if I've been approved to serve as a judge? For what duration should I wait for approval?
There are four award programs, each with its judging period. You will receive an email informing you of the judging period for the award program you applied to.

Question: When will the BASA Awards publish my profile? When will I get my eCertificate?
Judges will be featured on the BASA website and receive e-Certificates after assessing at least 50 entries. Please note that the e-Certificate will be issued after the winners' announcement.

Question: Is it possible for me to apply to additional BASA award programs, and will I receive an eCertificate for each award program in which I judge?
You can apply to be a judge for multiple award programs. For each program you qualify for and participate in, you will get an e-Certificate.

Question:  Who is eligible to be a Judge?
Professionals, business owners,  and leaders from all industries in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia are welcome to be judges. Simply visit our website on the judges page and click "Apply to be a judge" for the award program you are interested in volunteering for as a judge. 

Question: Who gets chosen to be a judge?
Judges are selected based on their qualifications and extensive experience in their respective industries.  BASA Awards highly appreciates and values expert views and opinions in their judging process

Question: Is it possible for someone to serve as both a judge and a nominee?

Judges are not restricted from participating as entrants. However, it is important to note that when submitting entries, judges will follow the due process, follow the same procedure, and pay all the applicable fees just as other participants. In addition, judges are not allowed to evaluate their nominations.

Question: How does the Judging process work?

The judging process involves evaluating and assessing the entries to identify the entrants that score above 75%. All entrants above the 75% mark are admitted to public voting.  After the public vote is completed, the Judges' round no. 2 starts. Finalists with the highest average score per category from both judges and public votes will be named BASA Winners. 

Question: How are scoring categories assigned to judges?
Judges are awarded categories based on their fields of expertise, work experience, and qualifications. 

Question: Is it possible for a judge to reject any assignment?
Judges have the right to recuse in case of conflict of interest. In addition, the judges can choose the number of entries they want to assess. However, BASA Awards encourages judges to evaluate at least 50 entries.  

Question: How can I receive a Judge’s eCertificate?Upon completing the evaluation process, judges will receive an e-Certificate and e-badge that can be shared online and on social media platforms. Judges will receive the e-certificate after the winners' announcement.
